Grimoire Cards are more then just a back story to Destiny, they also have bonus effects attached to them in way of a ranking system.
Let me explain, gaining 1000 kills in a certain location, lets say Earth for example will earn you extra materials being dropped from material nodes in this destination, or gaining 25 Crucible Control Wins will allow Cloaks, marks, and bond drops in that Playlist and Tournament Tickets also become more common.
